Making the transition. Here at AustralianGambling we get what you’re going through, as experienced poker players ourselves, we know how demanding just the thought of making a living off poker may seem. It requires patience, and of course a bankroll sufficient to withstand your pocket aces getting cracked ten hands consecutively, but that’s just part of the fun. Oct 18, 2017 Long hours, late nights, and a lot of time spent on the road or lots of hours in front of a computer screen are definitely necessary if you’re hoping to make a living as a tournament poker player. Unless you have a massive bankroll and are one of the 20 or 30 best players in the world, you aren’t going to make a living playing five tournaments a month.

This talk about study tools, learning curve, availability, popularity, new players coming in to the game. These things are nice to talk about. But the real reason it's harder to make money at poker is because of the cost of doing business. When the Rio sets the tone by doubling the rake in the main event from $300 to $600. This was a dark day in poker.
In California the live game rakes have gone through the roof. You can't make a profit playing in 3-6 or 4-8 limit game. You can't even come close to breaking even. Some of the brave poker writers have mentioned how you can't beat a small game because of the rake. But they just give it a small mention. All around good guy and poker ambassador Daniel Negreanu likes to talk about what a scum Howard Lederer is. But I haven't heard him complain about players getting gouged by the rake. I wonder why. Bottom line. A bigger percentage of people who play poker are losers now. And it was never a good percentage to start with. I've been playing poker for 20 years and I don't know one guy who's not a prop that beats the game.
